Seeing Navy Pier is a good idea, or instead go to Sears Tower, or go on an architecture tour (on the river, heard it was awesome). I would say go to 2121 N Clark Street and have lunch/dinner at Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder, they have incredible food (pizza pot pies and grinders, and you have to have the Mediterranean Bread) and the menu will tell you a little about the history of the restaurant and the area around it. Then you will have some awesome food to keep you tied over on your long flight!

5 hours will fly by pretty quickly so you won't be able to do too much, but the Shedd aquarium is cool and so is the Museum of Science and Industry.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

I lived outside Chicago since 1990. Great City!

Take the Blue Line train to downtown Chicago (about an hour or so). Walk down State Street, the most famous street in Chicago. Do a little shopping. Stop by Miller's Pub on Wabash and Adams for lunch and a beer. Walk over to the Art Institute on Michigan Ave. Look at a few Manets. Come out and walk north to Millenium Park (hopefully it won't be too cold). Walk down Michigan Ave and do some window shopping. Or do some real shopping. Stop at the Apple store and goof around with the new computers and iPods. Stop at the Nike store and pray to the Michael Jordan statue. Walk down to the John Hancock Building, enter the South side of the building, go up to the Signature Room and have a drink and a little something to snack on and enjoy the view (if you're a woman, go to the ladies room. Supposedly the best view of all is inside the women's bathroom. I've never seen it, though). Take the Michigan Ave. bus south back to State Street. Get on the Blue line train and head back to the airport. make sure you give yourself enough time to get back.

You could take one of those tour buses but A) it will be cold most likely and riding on the top of an open air double-decker bus isn't my idea of fun, and besides you'll only be able to see things from the outside. And you could take a tour on the river, but again, it's going to be cold. Screw that...
