I finally figured out there was no jolly fat man living at the North Pole when I was 15. I believed in the physical Santa for so long because I saw him when I was 5. He came to my house and brought me the little Charmkins windmill house that I had been wanting so much. I still have it. I told him what I really wanted was for him to bring my Daddy back home. (Dad was in the Navy and had been out at sea. I'd overheard my mom saying he might not be back for Christmas.) Santa promised that Dad would be home that night and he was! Years later, I learned it was my Dad in a Santa suit. It made it all the more special for me. For me, it was more proof that I am truly loved by my parents.
When I confronted my mom with the truth at the age of 15 and she confirmed it, I wasn't upset like most kids. The Santa story wasn't something my parents did to decieve me, it was something they did to bring a little magic into my life and theirs.
I have always seen Santa Claus as an attitude rather than a person. It doesn't really matter to me that he's not a flesh and blood person. He's the spirit of giving that is in every person. That's more profound and special than a generous guy who lives at the North Pole.

Growing up we never believed in him. I come from a big family and all my brothers never believed either. Kids on the bus going to school would talk about Santa and I was the little booger saying there isn't a Santa Clause, it's just some guy dressed up. My brother pulled Santa's beard off at a local department store and all the kids were horrified. We were brats. We just didn't want kids to believe a lie I guess.

I don't really think I have ever stopped believing in Santa Claus. Even as an adult with children of my own I haven't stopped believing.
This is what I really think has happened:
Santa needs to accumulate and deliver toys to children all over the world in one night. How did he solve this problem? Well, he recruited parents and others who love children. These parents and others are actually extensions of Santa Claus. Santa needs to deliver toys to my kids in Seattle Washington USA and he needs to deliver toys to some family's kids in Germany at the same time....well how else could he solve it?
Santa exists...he is just sitting up at the North Pole on Christmas Eve, directing traffic.

I was about 11. I think one of my siblings let it slip that it wasn't real.
By the way, there was a Saint Nicholas and the deeds are true; the basic premise for the myth (like all good myths) has some basis in fact. It's the elves and reindeer and all of that I lost but not the faith in the ideal the man set before.

I was about 5 or 6 when I stopped believing in Father Christmas. We left some brandy and biscuits out for him before going to bed. And I came downstairs a while later to discover my parents scoffing the lot!

I haven't stopped believing in Santa Clause, as my stepmom threatened me by saying that if I ever did I wouldn't get any more presents. PERIOD. Although I found out that he wasn't real when I was about nine.

I can't remember how old I was, but one Christmas my grandfather dressed up at Santa. He came through the garage in Reebok sneakers with a pillowcase.
That pretty much ended my belief in Santa.

I was about 6. Me and my then 8-year-old sister found a picture of my dad lying in front of the Christmas tree with all the presents, and you could see out the window--it was night time. We put it together. lol
