There are some colleges that do have a JV team. But the only way you can practice with the Varsity is by trying out. It also depends on what the coaches need, some for instance would invite some students with some skill to scrimmage against his players in certain practices, like mines did at Cal back in 96.
If you don't make the squad you can play in intramural leagues or park league to help you work on your game.

NO! Here is the deal. When you get to college it becomes a business. the business is that coaches have to win ball games to win money from not only the school but from those around there community, so they do not have time to deal with outsiders that don't have a chance to make the squad. Forgive me if I sound harsh or mean, but that is the reality. If you are at a Division I or II school, then you will be able to play on the JV squad. Other than that any college level (besides junior college), has intramural leagues that play during the basketball season. So you could try that. What ever the case is good luck.
GOD BLESS YOU and take care.

It depends. Certain colleges have walk on try outs, which are often open to whoevers interested. Also, most schools have practice teams, comprised of players from the school who are not on the varsity team. Find out if your school has a practice team, or perhaps club, so you could get experience and improve your game. Playing with people better than you may get discouragin at times, but it will make you a better player in the long run.

Hey...never say never...Scottie Pippen was a manager at Central Arkansas who got to practice with the team, then made the team, then made history...Many college coaches use managers who are very good players because they may have to fill in when several team members are injured, sick, or absent...Managers also work with players as they run through drills or shoot (rebounding and passing the ball back, for example)...Good luck... a former coach

Ask that question when you get to college. The coach will tell you if you are good enough for the basketball team.
