This is what actually happens:

CaCO3 + H2SO4=H20+CO2+CaSO4

In short, you get carbon dioxide, water and CaSO4. CaSO4 is better known as gypsum:

Gypsum is used to create plaster of paris.

Whoever said acid rain needs to go back to class.

The calcium sulphate isn't soluble so the reaction slows down and eventually stops as the sulphate protects the limestone

Limestone is mostly composed of calcium carbonate and when you add sulfuric acid you get this CaCO3 (s) + H2SO4(aq) ---------> CaSO(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2 (g) Reaction is exothermic:- produces heat
