Supposedly you use a piece of string and a tie a personal object to it. Then you hold it out over a piece of paper with yes and no written on the paper and then you can ask the pendulum questions. Kind of like an eight ball. I've also heard of people doing this to find out if they are having a boy or girl when pregnant. It is supposed to go around in a circle for girl and back and forth for a boy. What are your thoughts?

I am asking only to see what other people think of it. I am not going to make one and base my life's decisions on it. It sounds interesting, is all.

Yes, I have heard of one. I've also heard of what you're talking about for the birth. (Though, I've always used a pencil instead. =P)
Actually, they're more accurate then what most people assume. The real reason they don't work for everyone is the misconception you just repeated. There is more to it then just tieing a personal object to string.
You have to embed it with personal energy as well. Also, you have to understand how to work with divination and dowsing. It's not just about simple 'yes and no' answers. ~.^
Personally, I prefer the tarot... But, pendulums are good, if you know how to use them. ^^
If you want to learn more, you can go to http://www.sacredmists.com They have several books on pendulum magick/divination. There's a kit here (Pendulum Kit by Sig Lonegren): http://store.sacredmists.com/az-dpenkit0p.html
Info: The pendulum is a tool that bridges the gap between the logical left brain and the intuitive right brain. By interpreting the movements of a swinging pendulum, you can tune into your intuition, find the answer to any question, and locate objects and energy centers in the earth.
This completely self-contained kit includes everything you need to become an expert dowser, including a pendulum with cord and a 128 page instruction book with exercises, dowsing charts, astrology charts, and maps. With your personal pendulum, you will have the key to unlocking the mysteries of the earth and its energy fields and tapping the unlimited potential of your own mind.

This theory is quite often used when contacting the supernatural. You get a piece of string or chain with a crystal attached & hold it out in front of you. Concentrait & ask a question where the answer would be 100% yes. Watch what happens to the pendulum. Then ask a No question. Now ask if there is anyone there...if the same thing happens as your yes question...be afraid!!

i've heard of one but it's like a dream catcher never works. I made something like that but didn't work. Oh and it's like asking a banana a question. Where you ask yes or no questions and if you get a y in the banana peice you slce off it's yes if not it's funny with the banana though cuase ask it the same queston over and over and u get yes and no alot so don't bother with a pendulam those count on wind or if you move your hand so it's just another supersticious myth. also if you were pregnat you can hold it out and ask boy or girl it does one thing and keep asking that and it should have 50% yes and 50% no out of 20-30 times.

I have heard of it. Me and my friends used to make them out of penclils, a tac, and peice of yarn. We would make and use them at slumber parties and sleepovers. We always had a blast playing with them.

this can work. but divination is tricky, and is never the end all be all future. it is the future if everything stays on it's present course.
