There is no such thing as a non-superstitious sailor... at least, not for long. Sitting in a very small boat in the middle of a great deal of water, tends to make you concentrate on thoughts of the infinite and your own mortality (.. and *all* boats are small, out of sight of land, where the water goes deep blue...) Prayers.. to whom? Your own belief system may dictate the general form... but, please, don't forget that there used to be gods of the sea... they may, or may not, have retired by now, but it never hurts to be nice to them... just in case. Before the first voyage, or right after launching, a toast is traditional... it's very important to offer a "libation" for the sea-gods. Respectfully poured into the water as an offering... I have no idea if it really works, but I've always done it in any new boat, at the start of each season or before a long passage. And I'll keep doing it... I prefer to have the gods as my drinking buddies than strangers...
