Sometimes I am so immersed in the story that I want it to continue - and I feel lost when it ends. Have you ever had that happen to you?

How do you handle this?

Yes!!! It's like saying goodbye to someone you really like.
This has always happened to me when I finished my favorite books and usually I read them again or read something else from the same author.

this was definitely my favorite question in a long while

Yes!! I hate that. Especially if it's a newer author or part of a series and the next book is like two years off. I'm an avid reader, so I just go to the library and grab another book. Hopefully it's good and I will get just as immersed in that one. Happy Reading!!

GOOD QUESTION ! Karla, I am now finishing a story by Stephen King that I have been reading for 24 YEARS! The story is called The Dark Tower. He published the first book of the series in 1982! He just recently published the last installment in the last year or so. What a long time to follow a story, and now I have about 200 pages left, and it's gone! That is what you were talking about x100, wouldn't you say? Good question, for sure!

Not so much "upset" as a bit melancholy - mainly because I've become so attached to the characters that I hate to see the story end.
But I've found that with the really great books, you can reread them about every five years or so and I think you'll find yourself discovering all sorts of things you missed the last time around.
The book, of course, doesn't change - but you do.
And don't forget - there are, thank God, so many really great books available that you could spend any number of lifetimes reading and still not finish them all.

What's worse, is I do that with my OWN books. : ) I write for children and make these books by hand that take all my soul and heart and mind. Each new one becomes my whole world. And, when I have to ship it off, I am as sad as when I kissed my babies goodbye at college. I am horrible about a good book ending. I miss the characters terribly for days. So, I fantasize and continue the story for myself until it plays out. You know it's a good book when it hurts to say goodbye. But, when you come back to the same book a couple of decades later, oh, my, what a sweet, fond reunion that is.

When I was reading the last of the Harry Potter series (don't call me lame) I was so wound up in the fact that Dumbledore died that I just couldn't go on, and the same thing happened when Sirius died in the book previous. I was in mourning it seemed like for days because I just couldn't believe it, but eventually I started reading another book and became emersed in it and it was okay again. But I had to read a happy book, The Secret Life of Bees, the others just wouldn't do.

Yes I do. There aren't many really great books around. I either end up reading it again (several times), or hope that there is a book that continues the story, or look for books by the same author for more really great books. One can only hope.

Yes, I have. It has happened so many times before. Its like you're at the ending and you want to keep going, but are unable to do so. I love to read, and when I can't read, especially from a great book that I have finished, its a terrible feeling. I agree with you and feel the same way!

I once read something that I enjoyed so much......no great work of literature or anything........but it was written quite recently and there was an e-mail address for the author. Just as long shot I wrote and asked her what happened next......and a few weeks later I got a reply.....from the other side of the world !

The reply didn't help much, because she said she didn't know what happened next......but I thought I'd tell you my story anyway.

every time.
It's even worse when it's the last book in a series or the second to last and the last one isn't out yet!
I just finished reading the second Abarat book and I am dieing to know if Carrion lives! he was such a perfect villian... IF HE DIES I'M GONNA CRY!!!!! plus they killed of Houlihan... he was too kewl to die...
also, recently finished Inkspell which is the sequel to Inkheart and the prequel to Inkdeath but inkdeath isn't out yet and I gotta know if they save Dustfinger or not and if the Book works!!!!... and how dare they kill Basta... why must all the good villians die!?!?!?!?!?!
That and the most recent Artemis Fowl book and the last Series of unfourtunate events book...
I AM GONNA HATE IT When I finish the last Harry Potter book... no more suspense... it will all be over.... I hate it when books do that...
hate it hate it hate it...
:(
