I have a 5 month old baby. She has a runny nose (clear), watery eyes, and a lot of sneezing. She isn't acting sick. Should I take her to the doctor, or is there an over the counter med I can try? ---The only OTC meds I found around here are for congestion, which isn't the problem.

I thought that it was allergies, but on her last appt, they said alergies are seasonal and she hasn't been alive for more than one season, so it can't be allergies???

You need to talk to your pediatrician, do not give her anything without checking with them first because everything given to them at that young age is measured by weight, that it why the directions on the box say consult a physician.

Try infant (not childrens) Advil. I found with the infant Tylenol my little guy got constipated. There are lots of OTC infant cold meds but don't be too quick to use them. Ask yourself these questions first:
1) are the symtoms affecting her sleep?
2) is there a fever?
3) is there anything non-medicinal I can do?
What you described above sounds like allergies to me. Unfortunately they won't be able to test her for them for a few years yet. Try these easy fixes:
1) use gentle scent free detergent on her clothes & bedding. Most brands have a "baby" detergent but make sure it is scent free
2) get a humidifier going. Will cut doen on the dryness that may be irritating her nose
3) do you have pets? Little one may be allergic...keep the pets out of the little ones room & away from the babies stuff for a little while...and if you notice a difference you have an answer
4) if you use any perfumes or air freshners make sure not to use them around the little one. Baby will pick up on scents on you too.
5) there is a Johnsons extra gentle baby soap...in a white bottle not the regular Johnsons...found it to be very mild on gentle skin
I am a allergy sufferer who passed along some of my allergies to my little guy. Thankfully he didn't get any of the really bad ones but by just washing his stuff in seperate detergent his sniffles & sneezes seemed to vanish. Talk to your doctor about allergy testing, they usually don't do it until 4 or 5 years old but it is something to plan for.
Good luck!!

It's probably allergies. I have a 6 month old, and he had the same problem a few weeks ago. He wasn't acting sick, so I let him be, and he's fine now. Pharmacists won't tell you what to give him, most otc meds for kids say to consult a physician for kids under age 2. If the problem persists, you should take her back to the Dr.

ok she might be teething babies nose run alot and the running can make her sneeze. But if she is having trouble with her bottle because of it I would go with a 1/2 tsp of benadryle. it will make hr sleepy but it helps when its time for her nap and at bed times. so she can drink her bottle and relax but i wouldnt give her more then that. not until she is older also if you dont want to go the meds rout there a baby saline drops that you drip in there little nose 4drops on each side lay her down and tilt her head back she wont like it but after a few mins you can suck it out with the nose sucker thing.

If you are worried take her to the doctor. Most pediatricians will give you a list of OTC drugs you can give and the dosage. When they talk about seasonal allergies, it has to do with which season the plants are blooming. Different plants bloom in spring and fall. Your daughter can still have seasonal allergies even if it is her first time to be in this season.

If she isn't acting sick and she is not running a fever go to any local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist on duty. Actually if she is only running a low grade fever you can also ask him about something with a fever reducer in it too. I know of some OTC's that are good but since I am a CPhT and not an actual pharmacist I by law cannot actually suggest an actual medication. And it is true that you have to develop allergies, but it doesnt take a full season to do that. I have had them all my life

It can be allergies, she does not have to be alive for a full yera to develop them, it could be the cotton wood etc.. I only give my children meds. if they are running a large fever, in pain or on antibiotics. Your baby is very young let her body work it out. Try a bit of spring cleanng to remove any irrantants from the air as well you can try to put cheese cloth over you air vents to filter the air. Also do you have any pets? They may need to find a new home. Good Luck

If you have a bulb syringe you can suction out her nose with saline water. As far as other meds are concerned I would not worry about giving her anything as long as she is not fussy.
If she starts to act fussy or if you are concerned, call your doctor and they will give you further instruction and decide if she needs to be seen or not.

I have had three children. and i would tell you NEVER give a baby OTC meds!! take her to a doctor/pedeatrician and do exactly as they say. even if the doctor says don't give her anything at all, then don't.

Try infant tylenol, it may not say if its for a runny nose or not but it does help. It helped my little girl that is 4 months.
