In Florence he made David his most famous statue. The David is 4.34/14.24 ft of marble. He made it during 1501 to 1504. David the statue became the symbol of Florence and was originally placed in the Piazza Della Signoria in the front of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall. With that statue he proved to his contemporaries that he was not only surpassed all modern artists, but also the Greeks and the Romans.

The statue of David was started by a different artist, Agostino di Duccio, in 1463.

In 1501 Michelangelo was comissioned to create the David. Michelangelo was given the block of marble that Duccion had carved. He makes the statue better.

Michelangelo works on the statue until 1504 when it was finally completed.
