The place where I rent movies has been calling me and telling me I have late fees when I haven't even rented any movies lately. Come to find out an ex-girlfriend who was never even on the account was renting movies on my account. Apparently the movie place wasn't checking who was on the account or anything but it must have been a big problem lately because they just started checking id's November 1st. My question is what my ex did illegal? Renting movies on someone else's account that you know your not on or is it just the movie places problem?

It is the movie places problem... they have a policy which THEY clearly violated by allowing unauthorized users to use YOUR account. Too F-ing bad for them, they should have tried training their minimum wage employees.

There is nothing the cops can do to the ex, if that is what you mean by "illegal". I would recommend talking to the manager of the store, explaining the situation and telling him that you will not be paying these "late fees", that you expect the fees to be removed from your account, and that you expect your account to be handled properly in the future. I free rental or two wouldn't hurt either for the bother this has caused you.

Its her fault but the place is going to make it your problem unless you can find some way to get them to take responsibility. It seems that you haven't done anything wrong. They are the ones handing out movies to anyone without proper checking. If it is just late fees and not missing movies they would be smart to just let it slide. In the long run they could be in a lot of trouble if they pressure you to pay up.

It is the movie rental store's job to check to see if the renter is an authorized user of an account. Go to the store and ask a manager to see copies of the rental receipts. If your signature is not on them and there are no other authorized users of your account, then you are in the clear. If the store hassles you any further, report them for fraud to your state attorney general's office.

How was she using your account? Did she have your card? If she did, then that's in part your fault for letting her have it. But the rental place is in part to blame too. Cancel your account and rent someplace else that DOES have you verify your account periodically.

I think it is, because why would the movie place start checking ID cards if there was no reson do that?

What she did is illegal, and the movie place, because they did not bother checking cannot hold you responsible.

it is illegal, but YOU are responsible for the account as the account holder, go to the store and ask for a copy of their rules and regulations as an account holder, read fine print -good luck!!!

its definitely illegal, and yes the movie place is at fault for letting her do so.....

the exact thing happened to me, so I complained and complained to the place until they removed those late fees

Tell them you are not paying. They were at fault. They may threaten you with reporting you to a collection agency (who are nasty people) and a negative report to your credit rating. Similar situation happened to me and I made a police report sent it to the seller/ company and I never heard from them again.
