You definately want to be able to do a background check on them and get references and ask if they are willing to get certified in cpr and first aid or coaches safety training. You want to ask them about their coaching philosophy and about the type of environment they want to have on the team. From this question you can see if they will fit with what you want the team to be. Some swim coaches are very serious, no games, hard practices, all about performance, even in rec leagues, and some coaches see rec leagues as being about the swimmers experience and having it be fun for everyone and giving everyone the chance to swim everything, etc. You also might want to ask them if they are willing to get into the water in order to help teach beginners on the team. Also, ask how they do meet entries. Is it about letting everyone try everything, or will the fastest kids get the most events and the slowest kids get fewer entries with whatever is leftover? Finally, I'd give them a couple situations and ask how they'd deal with it. For example, a parent being upset with their kids meet entries, two swimmers verbally or physically fighting at practice, or a parent comes to the coach with concerns that their child is being made fun of or picked on at practice because of their weight or skills. It is most important to make sure the coach has a coaching philosophy that matches what you want for the team, and that the coach is able to deal with both the parents and swimmers in a manner that you agree with, because that is where most of the problems come from with age-group swim coaches.

Hi
well I assume the REC department will run a background check.. if not Id worry.. so assuming a check will be run... this is what Id ask
1. How long have you coached?
2. What age levels have you coached?
3. Where have you coached?
4. What is your education or training for coaching?
5. What is your philosophy for coaching age level swimmers?
6. How do you handle Motivating children who do not want to be on swim team. that are there because parents want them on team?
7. How do you handle Parents who are over the top about competition issues?
8. Have you ever hosted a swim meet?
9. What is your experience using Swim tek or Hytek software for the computer, or other ways you have kept trtack of records, times etc...
10. Give me an example work out?
11. Do you swim yourself?
12. How much do YOU swim?
13. are you a certified Lifeguard or willing to get certification... a NO answer here should END the interview and keep looking
You shoul not have a coach on deck who is not certified in lifeguarding or willing to get certified.
14. Any other questions specific to the needs or your area and kids
15. Please describe what you like most about coaching?
16. Please describe what you like least?
17. Please describe your dream coaching j ob?
18. WHy do you want this job?
19. DO you have any history of domestic abuse or violence towards children or adults?
20. Do you have any history of Substance abuse , Drug , alcohol addictions?
Reasons you ask the last 2 even with a background check is to see the reaction.. see how open they are or if they are put back by those questions... anyone who is clear and has nothing to hide will not be bugged by intrusive questions when t comes to a job working with children.
ALso make sure you get a familiy history.. ask about marital status and home life,..does he have kids and so on....
A good coach is hard ot find....
College kids majoring in Sports are often good but inexperienced..older folks may have experience but hard to get for the money you pay and so on.....
Good Luck... trust your gut
