I think it's because if the insides of your body are visible, something is horribly wrong and you're in trouble. So we're wired to see it as disgusting.

You're right.
Evolutionary psychology at work, folks.
If we can see the inside of ourselves, when we know full well that all that stuff is supposed to be under the skin and out of sight, otherwise there's a problem, then there's a problem.
Besides, when do you see the insides? When you've been hurt or when you're dead. Never otherwise.
So it's natural to see it as gross.

I'm a nurse and I would prefer not to see the insides, but sometimes I have to as part of my job. I don't think of it as disgusting, just an integral part of the whole.

It's the same reason that people think porn is dirty. If it's not usually on display...it's taboo. It's not that the inside of the body is disgusting...it's just not seen on a day to day basis.

I think you might be on to something there. It could very well be to prevent against cannibalism. Surgeons and pathologists study anatomy in an objective, academic fashion. This provides them with the detachment necessary to carry out such work.

I think every person would cringe if they saw somebody torn apart and exposed. It's our instinct to abhor the sight, but why? I have no clue.
