I think deciding whether people are mentally fit to be let out of prison and into society ie. paedophiles, murderers and rapists, and having the power to keep them locked up if they are a danger to anyone, is quite an important demanding job but some people think its airy fairy rubbish, what do you reckon?

I think the problem here is that what most of the public see is the drama programs on TV which are about such people but have been fictionalised to make them watchable. Programs like silent witness tend to give the impression that a forensic pathologists' job is to catch murderers but in fact it is to analyse the remains and present their findings in court. If they behaved as some of the fiction pathologists do their evidence would be inadmissible. I have never seen Cracker but I imagine that gives much the same distorted view of the psychologists job

I do not necessarily think that people believe the job is airy fairy rubbish it is just that when dealing with such a sensitive subject people want concrete results. Unfortunately the art of forensic psychology is not like mathematics there is no right or wrong answer there is, on a basic level, only historical patterns that can be used to make a picture of a possible subject. Unfortunately there is human error and also those subjects who fall outside of the normal patterns. Because of this people are more likely to remember the mistakes and wrong guesses (as they see it) which have resulted in wasted time, more damage, death or wrong convictions rather than the positive results.

I don't know why. I admire those that I know in the field of forensic psychology. It is amazing the insight they get from criminals.

It is anything but fairy rubbish, an expert forensic psychologist can make or a break a jury's decision in a Court of law.

Do what you feel is best for you.

Take Care

Yes i do think it is a demanding job being a forensic psychologist. I want to be a forensic scientist and it is a brave job doing this all. You have to be strong mentally to do this. I have never heard people saying it was a dreamy job. They need to be more educated on this topic.

I don't think people think it is a dreamy unreal professison. Often when the Ps, Ms and Rs are let out and reoffend, the wider public question who in their right mind let them out to do it again - however, non of us are magicians and sometimes wrong decisions are made.

It IS a pseudo science. I have had a lot of contact with psychologists in my time and none of them have anything like a brain at all. It is something for numpties to do if they are too dim to get into medicine.
All the ones I knew were only interested in having power over helpless people in order to get their rocks off at their expense, wanting to feel adequate and only interested in the maintenance of their status. A lot of highly inadequate and inconsequential simpletons with delusions of intellect. The Royal College of Psychology is run by women who are as hard as nails, if they are not lesbians they certainly are seperatist misandrists. The male psychologists there all wear corderuoy safari suits, have beards and sandals with socks. The odd in charge of the id.

forensic means you have to deal with dead people and what drove their killers.
Besides could you bear the responsibility to let somebody out off prison, and he commits a crime (are you then guilty as well)
Its a long way, you have to study psychology and go from there.
But if you make it, good luck
