I'm a U.S. soldier deployed in Iraq with a wonderful woman waiting for me back home. We will be apart this Xmas and I wanted to get her something really special. Looking for something I can order online and have sent to her. I've thought about some nice jewelry but she's a a collegiate athlete and not much of the stereotypical girly-girl type. Also she is a Canadian attending school in the U.S. so maybe something that a Canadian girl would appreciate? Thanks to all who reply.

First of all, I'm proud that there are young men like you who are strong enough and willing enough to be away from their homes and loved ones and putting their lives on the line for strangers in the hopes of providing freedom and a better government.

Where is your girl going to school? If it's a cold area, or if she's going back to Canada, something to keep here warm during the winter (since YOU can't keep her warm) A nice, practical scarf and gloves and socks. Then, maybe a book that you've either read or heard about that you could share your thoughts about through letters or email. Jewelry is always nice, but it's more fun to get something sparkly in person. I'm not much of a jewelry person either, but I like rings. There are some that say things on them, like "Forever yours" that would let her know you were thinking of her and she could wear it every day, not like something fancy that would mostly sit in a jewelry box waiting for a special occasion.

Write her a song or a poem! A guy wrote me a poem once, commemorating a special day we shared, and that was one of the coolest things I've ever received!

You'll think of something. After all, she's YOUR girl!

First off thank you for fighting for the US in Iraq. All of us back in the US really appreciate it. I also applaud both you and your girlfriend, yet mostly you, for having the courage to be apart over the holiday season. I know that must be very hard to do. When it comes to gifts I would definately write her a well thought out letter and give it to a friend or someone to hold that could give it to her around Christmas. Girls like small things, even my friends that are athletes enjoy small things. Even though you are not really thinking about getting her jewlery maybe get her a charm bracelet with one charm that could either represent her sport, a heart charm, or a Canadian flag charm. If you get her the heart charm you could write in your letter to her that that heart represents your heart and how you always think about her, or something like she's always in your heart or something in that arena. It does not have to be expensive either. If you do decide to do the charm bracelet you could get her a charm marking every other milestone, holiday or event that comes up. It is small, meaningful and depending on the size of the braclet it might not interfere with her sport. Or you could get her something like a nice sweater, or something like that. (Once again I am bot sure where she goes to schol so if it is someplace in the southern area of the US think of getting somehting else pending on the type of weather.
I hope you and your girlfriend both have the best holiday season. Warm wishes to you both, God Bless and good luck in Iraq.
