That's a good question. I think the things that actually cause physical harm are the only ones that should be important like smoking and drinking...not watching porn, which only affects you sitting on your couch. It's not like you're walking around on the street with a portable DVD player blasting a porno movie for everyone to see and hear, unlike smoking which can harm innocent bystanders because all it takes is a smell of the smoke that goes straight to their lungs, while they are simplt waiting for a bus or to cross a street corner.

Tobacco has a long-standing financial tradition in the U.S. (well, so does porn, but I can't imagine a bunch of video producers getting together and moaning about the rising cost of producing DVDs....unlike "how's your crop doing?" at the local co-op)

There is a long history of taxing tobacco....and who wants to kill the bird that's laying the golden eggs? Money, darlin', MONEY.

My fellow Americans (ohman, now I feel like Richard Nixon....moan....the horror, the horror) kinda have a hangup about sexual expressiveness. If it feels really good, you'd BETTER not be doing it!

Think George Carlin did a bit on how he'd rather have his kids watching a movie with 2 people making love, rather than 2 people trying to kill each other---good bitter humor there.

Think you might enjoy reading Schlosser's _Reefer Madness_, where he's analyzing the financial status of the modern porn industry (amongst other things). Good book----he's the same guy that wrote _Fast Food Nation_, BTW.

Smoking is an explicitly preached against by Christians as a whole. One can walk with a cigarette, cigar or pipe without parents covering the mouth and noses of their children; however, if one walked while perusing pornographic magazines, those same parents would immediate;t hide their children from you.

Smoking isn't hidden from children. Pornography is kept hidden from children.

If children must be protected from any form of entertainment or habit, that habit is considered unacceptable in public.

It doesn't make sense. The beliefs I have put them both at the same level, neither should be done and both have the same consequences. Putting the physical problems from smoking aside, I don't think either are acceptable and not one is worse than other to me.

we are supposed to think of sex as this forbidden thing that no one should see until they want a baby. Ciggarettes although deadly was formerly considered to be fine (look at commercials for smokes featuring cartoon characters). Now we are being more health consoius and smoking will someday be as acceptable as looking at boobs.

I think it has to do with organized religion's attempt to control sexuality in the modern (and not so modern) history of America. It was burned into many people's mind that sex is a bad thing, a sin. I don't think that was ever the case with cigarette smoking.

Hmmm...good question.
Yet, isn't there a connection in there somewhere?
People used to smoke after having sex...or, at least I used to smoke after sex.
But I quit smoking a long time ago and the sex is even better!

They both involve self abuse, but I guess porn can sometimes involve the wasting of trees as a natural resource for tissues.
