[[[TMI warning in advance!]]] Ever since I started menstruating at 11, I've had very irregular periods (I'm 24 now). I will often go for months in between periods, and when the period finally does come, it's oftentimes thicker, browner, and lighter than a regular flow. Several OB/GYNs have said that I need to get on the Pill to regulate my cycle, since it's not good to go for so long in between periods. I don't really want to interfere with Mother Nature though, unless it would be really bad for my body not to. So which is better: using synthetic horomones to regulate my cycle (and dealing with the associated risks), or just letting Mother Nature do her thing (and dealing with the associated risks)?

I would say go on the pill. There are some light pills that don't have high hormone concentrations, so you wouldn't need to be worried about harming your body as much. It wouldn't be bad for your body to NOT go on the pill, but it would settle a lot of the problems. For one thing, the pill is not bad for you unless you smoke and/or are very obese. I don't know how old you are, but I think it would be more convenient for you to regulate your cycle. Otherwise, it could go on for years like it does now. Wouldn't you rather have a structured cycle, without lapses and uncertainties (especially if you want to become sexually active)? I had to start taking the pill when I was 16 because of those exact same problems, and not only did my cycle get much more regular, but I also got nicer skin and hair and had less cramping and discomfort. When I got off the pill a few months later, my cycle remained normal. I really don't think you have to worry about harming your body by taking the pill. Just because the hormones are synthetic doesn't mean they're harmful. They simply help your body trigger reactions that your natural hormones aren't strong enough to do on their own, and they stimulate further hormone release in your body. It's the same thing as taking vitamins.

I don't think there is anything wrong with not being on BC pills, especially if you are not sexually active. I would schedule an appointment with the doctor and voice your concerns with him next time you go. I don't like taking anything if I don't have to either. Usually when I take BC pills, it messes up my period a lot worse than what it was. The only thing I have tried and liked was the Implanon. It's an implant in your arm that lasts for three years. It's not for everybody, but since I am sexually active and with a long time partner, I didn't want to run the risk of having children before I was ready. I love the implanon. It's a suggestion, but if you don't want to take something then don't.

If your OB/GYN thinks that you should take the pill than you should. If you eat healthy and you have gone that many years with an irregular period, than chances are it's not going to regulate on its own. Many women take the birth control pill with very little if any side effects.

let it be because there are risks for taking the pill and it will eventually get to normal if you let it be. Eat well, exersize daily, and you should have a regular cycle soon. good luck! :P

If it doesn't bother you, I'd say let it be.
