it's a playstation 2 disc. and the scratches aren't even very bad, but it still won't play. Is there any way I can remove the scratches myself?

Not all scratches can be repaired, but you can go to Radio Shack and buy a device that does attempt to repairs surface scratches in CDs and DVDs. They do often times work.
