You could use the Reuters stock screening tool at:

http://www.investor.reuters.com/nscreen/builder.asp

It does allows you to screen for companies based on state and exchange. You'd have to decide what criteria you would use to define just what a "top performing company" is -- best return on equity, best price change over the last 52 weeks, whatever?

However, just selecting Rhode Island companies that are on the New York Stock Exchange only shows a listing of four companies:

HAS -- Hasbro, Inc.
CVS -- CVS Corporation
TXT --Textron Inc.
TVL --LIN TV Corp.

Once you have that list, you could add a number of different ratios or other data, then export the data to EXCEL and manipulate it any way you want.

I needed the same information about IN and ended up finding it in the Business Section of the local paper (Indianapolis Star). I would suggest getting your local newspaper and looking in the business section, they just might have a list of locally listed stocks as mine did. You can then check the 52 wk highs or whatever parameters you feel would qualify a company as a "top performer".
