one and one half = three halves
therefore, one third of 4500 is one half the original cost
one third of forty-five hundred = fifteen hundred
fifteen hundred = one half original cost
original cost = three thousand, 3000

CHECK

half of three thousand = 1500
one and one half = 3000 +1500 = 4500

Voila!
