And please, no sarcastic answers like "a penis". I'm not talking about what makes one MALE..I'm talking about what makes one a "man", as in the GENDER. If you took a genetically born male and castrated him, would he cease to be a man? So..sex organs don't define our gender...so, what then, "makes a man a man"?

So far, all the things that were mentioned, can women not possess these traits as well? I don't consider them distinctively "male" traits.

Testosterone is the ultimate substance that seperates a man from a women, therefore making his gender males. This hormone has been offered as an explanation for all the infamies of mankind. For why men start street fights and civil wars, throw chairs across the room during sporting events, drive too fast, grunt, yell and essentially conquer whatever is in their reach.

However, some people may believe it is the clothes that they wear that makes them a man...but is it? Just because they wear trousers and a shirt does that mean that with them clothes they have 'become' male?

Or is it that one becomes male because of society's expectations upon the gender of what, they believe, people should be for example: society sees somebody with short hair, wearing trousers and a shirt, and therefore automatically that person has been given a gender, male....

However is it the different traits that come with the hormones seperating male and females. Males get the rationality, activity, competitiveness, aggressiveness and dominance. Women are given emotionality, empathy, cooperativness, gentleness, passivity, dependence and submission.

Some people think hat military training gives you the gender male, "The Army Will Make a Man Out of You. "

I believe that it is one's personality which then makes their gender male. Of course the hormones ultimately give the gender however, just because someone has a certain hormone does not specifically mean that they are a certain gender.

But his has got to be the best question that has got me really thinking so thank you very much :-) Very good question!!

A man cannot bear children. Men are usually stronger physically then women. A man can be a husband. A man can be a brother. A man can be a father. What makes a "man" uniquely a "man"? I believe it's his capacity to fix whatever he faces or at least try until he runs out of possibilities. Human beings exhibit similar characteristics be it man or woman. However, what is the overriding strong undeniable "male" characteristic associated with being a "man"? Strength, problem solving, stability, protective are some strong "male" characteristics. Yes, yes, women exhibit these too, but they aren't associated as "strong characteristics" of being a "woman".

A masculine male is a man. Masculinity being the sense one is male (not the contrived Western masculinity, natural masculinity). When a man is castrated, he remains a man. When a boy is castrated, he is a eunuch. Gender is indeed seperate from sex, but a man is a masculine male.

Also, I suppose, maturity.

A man is a person that has overcomed obstacles, that knows the price of effort, that is wise by personal experience, that has a good (justified) self esteem, that radiates dignity and doesn't need to swear to get its point across, that has read a lot and has managed to cross reference with personal experience, that strives to be a good father for his children, hoping to make responsible, ethical and humane adults out of them... And basically that is worthy of respect.
