What do people think about the fact that because the state that I live has a constitutional amendment against same sex marriage, that is the reason my spouse and I have to live in sin. The state has mandated us sinners by virtue of this constitutional amendment.

Huh?

I don't think I understand this . . . I assume your 'spouse' is the same sex as you and you are, therefore, living in a homosexual arrangement.

What about that is sinful? The fact that you are not married? Who says not being married is a sin? If you are using the Bible as reference to the sinfulness of this, then isn't the Bible also 'against' homosexuality, as well, defining it as a sin? Being able to get married is the lesser of the worries here if you don't want to be sinful.

Not to mention that all the government does is issue a piece of paper. Marriage is, essentially a civil union- 'civil' meaning 'by the government', and 'union' meaning a joining. The government joins you. It has no real meaning about love, desire, family, or anything. People who want to add those things generally go to the beach, a church, skydiving- somewhere that is not a court, that represents that something more than joint tax forms and asset division aren't the only things bringing them together. If you're operating on the belief that homosexuality isn't wrong in God's eyes (saying that Leviticus has all sorts of outdated rules, etc.), then certainly a commitment ceremony- one that absolutely mirrors a government-sanctioned marriage- is exactly the same in His eyes. Right?

I'm just trying to figure out what you're saying.

I chafe at the word sinner. That implies that you buy the whole sin thing in the first place. Yes, many of our state governments have done some stupid things. But as referenced by our experience in the past they will EVENTUALLY be undone... I just hope it is in my lifetime. I mean really, I believe it was in the 'great' state of Alabama that it was actually still illegal for a black man to marry a white woman until just a few years ago... although I think the reverse was actually legalized long ago.. odd...

If it weren't for the fact that religious zealots seem to be in control this issue of sin wouldn't even be a question. EVEN in Texas they realized how ridiculous it was to try to legislate the morality/actions of grown adults. All this hoopla banning gay marriage and whatnot seems like a last ditch effort to keep control over the country and the truth is, slowly but surely, intelligent people are realizing that the world hasn't ended yet and gays have been getting married left and right all over the world.

As a matter of fact (and with a certain degree of irony acknowledged) my girlfriend and I are going to Canada to get married this summer. Following this we are going back 'home' to Missouri (another supremely unenlightened state) to have our reception. I don't expect the religious gestapo to come breaking down the doors although many of my family members will likely wish they would.

It is so sad to me that some people are so insecure with themselves and their own lives and loves that they feel they must attempt to make everyone else as miserable as they are...

Keep up the good fight... oh and WE voted today as well! :)

WRONG.
The people of that state have said that you dont have the right to force them to change their culture.
You have every legal right to share legal, financial, as well as medical responibilities. As any other person.
Many large medical insurance's also allow you to join collectivlly as a couple.
Quit your whining and accept the fact that The American culture that allows gay couples to be open about there relationship, is the same one that does not want you to force me to accept a fundmental change in what we believe "marriage" should be.

People can vote against gay rights all they want but we're still gonna be here!!! Not going away! A few rights here and there sure would make it easier, though!

Your sin is your behavior, not what some government thinks of that behavior.
