Personally, I like princess cut the best. If she has small hands, or skinny fingers I wouldn't suggest something too big. Stick with a reasonable budget. You can always buy nice wraps for the diamond later down the road and she could help pick that out.

My dad owns a jewelry store, so of course, before I was engaged I had my ring picked out and everything. But that's just me. White gold is very popular, however, yellow gold is making a come back. Princess cut is very very nice. However, I would suggest also asking when you go to the jewelry store if they have round diamonds set in a square setting. It looks very much like princess cut, and it makes the diamond look bigger, which is always a good thing. It's called an illusion setting. That's what I have, It is very very pretty. I have 1/3 of a carat. That's a nice sized diamond. You are supposed to spend one month's salary on the ring, so whatever you make in one month is how much your ring should cost. I have been hearing that it's 3 months now, but that's pretty spendy. I would say that getting 1/2 carat or less is very acceptable, and that's a pretty good sized diamond. For the engagement ring, I would suggest just a princess cut solitare diamond on white or yellow gold (it's up to you!), if you can find a round cut in an illusion setting, that would be pretty, but I don't know if they make that on newer rings anymore. You could also get the princess cut setting, and they can place four square-shaped diamonds in the setting to make it look like there is just one big diamond in there. It's a little bit cheaper to do it that way, and it looks very pretty. You can also buy the wedding band at the same time, actually, they usually come in sets unless you just want to buy the engagement ring at the same time. I don't believe it saves you a whole lot of money buying the entire set though. Make sure the diamonds are SI or VS 2 (or better) quality. SI at the very least. That way the diamond is clear and very little inclusions.

The most beautiful engagement ring I have ever seen has a pearl instead of a diamond. Gorgeous. That's the kind I want.

Buy her a half carat marquis cut diamond. Very classy and timeless. It will look really good on her hand. Those round diamonds and heart shaped diamonds are kind of cheesy.
