Pillows can harbor Aspergillus fumigatus, a fungus that exacerbates asthma symptoms. Histoplasma capsulatum is a fungus that is found in the soil and causes histoplasmosis, a disease of the lungs with symptoms like tuberculosis, which can then spread to other organs. Pneumocystis pneumonia, a common cause of death in AIDS patients, is an opportunistic lung infection caused by the fungus Pneumocystis carinii, which was previously considered a protozoan.

In addition to the above, Cryptococcus, Blastomyces, and Coccidioides all cause serious lung infections in humans, known respectively as cryptococcosis, blastomycosis, and coccidioidomycosis. In addition, a number of fungi that are not usually serious pathogens, like Candida, Aspergillus and Rhizopus can cause serious, even fatal, infections in patients who are immunosuppressed, either by AIDS or by chemotherapeutic agents.
