It depends for what. Gas is most efficient in furnace and water heater but nowadays it's kind of expensive. Electric is the worst for heat and cost much more. But really a homeowner directly dosen't care about effecently as much as how much it will cost him. If electric heat is cheaper he/she will choose this. Kind of nearsighted. Fuel oil is about the same as gas but may be a little expensive. The advantage of fuel is if many people in your area has fuel oil the truck can do a single run to many houses making the bill cheaper. With fuel oil you don't pay a distribution fee and other cost. In Fuel oil you can actually see how much your using and what you have left (psychological affect). You save actually because you can see what you can manage. Fuel oil though is dangerous becuase the fuel source is right next to you house. But they have underground fuel tanks now....
