yes, sadly. looks are so important in our world that people only see the outer layer of our beings. why should it matter if you are a little overweight? a little older? not too pretty? these are the hidden prejudices. and don't let anyone tell you they aren't there.
older employees are a valuable resource:
older women re-entering the work force aren't looking for husbands and trying to start families, so they would be more liable to stay in your employ longer.
older employees aren't apt to be phoning in 'sick' [read hung-over /stoned from too much partying].
many men, and women, miss out on wonderful relationships because they are looking for that 'perfect' person. and employers are the same. sad but true .
if i were in h.r. i would be different from the norm and hire that gal that is a little frumpy or that fella with the 'not so perfect' teeth as long as they fulfilled other qualifications. i would suspect they would be far more loyal employees than the 'pretty ones' if only because i gave them a chance. pretty people don't have to try as hard as they quite often can get by on their looks.
having said all that there are exceptions to every rule! my theory may not always prove to be right, but i'm thinking it is most of the time!

I'm not in HR, but in my experience an overweight person is less likely to get a job, all other factors being equal. Ditto that for an older person. I don't think it's conscious discrimination on the part of the people who are doing the hiring, but they have to think about the fact that the person they hire is going to represent the company to customers and the general public, so they want to "put on the best face" possible. It's very unfair for people to think that an overweight person is somehow less educated or doesn't work as hard as someone of normal weight, but it happens -- some people see an overweight person and think "If he/she can't take care of his/her weight, why should I trust that he/she can take care of my business needs?" We all know that just because a person is overweight doesn't mean they're not the best person for any given job, but that's the underlying prejudice.

Yes. An overweight person is less likely to get a job. And also an older person.
It's really not discrimination. Overweight people and older people have more health risks than normal weight or younger people. This is usually the case.
Overweight and older people would have a tendency to take more sick days. Also it would cost more for their health insurance.

I even ought to assert this. i'm an over weight woman. I have medical topics. I have had solid jobs and characteristic been head sought for my ability to the interest nicely. I stay in Oklahoma and maximum individuals do not pay ok the following. besides the undeniable fact that the most suitable interest I had, I made $13.00 an hour and characteristic no degree. I now personal my personal employer and characteristic given the individuals I used to artwork for a run for his or her funds. the numerous reason is that I trust in myself. in case you flow into an interview and don't have the arrogance in your self or on your ability to do the interest, it doesn't count number what you look to be on the exterior. all the interviewer will see is the shortcoming of self assurance and could pickup on that and could experience that is going to bypass over into the interest. What I do for a residing is prepare people in interviewing, resume and different Pre- employment skills, then help the recent business employer and the recent employ with keep on with alongside service. the individuals I artwork with are disabled. some significantly and some gentle with purely carpal tunnel. I were waiting to assist people get jobs that different organizations couldn't. because I coach them the thanks to be confident in all parts. i recognize it may look like i'm tooting my personal horn, yet i'm not. that is purely what i think.

I'm not a HR person, but I've worked in many big organizations, it is not about looks/appearance. It's about working knowledge and experience. To be discriminating is illegal and that is something that the employer definitely does not want to make headlines in the local news papers

unfortunately the world we live in is based on appearances, so the likelyhood of an over weight person getting the job versus someone who is thin is hard. same goes with old people, now a days the "ideal" person for the job is young, good looking and thin. anything else and you basically are hard pressed to find a job

usually, if you are older, fatter, uglier, have poor teeth, poor grammar, ect...you will be less likely to get the job over your younger, skinner, prettier, well educated competition
can you blame them?
