I see a lot of hateful answers (Democrats are poor. Democrats have no lives. Democrats are Communists.) and I see a lot of decent answers about the rich getting tax breaks while the middle and lower classes make up the difference. One answer that stood out to me, though, was Mis Managed's. Do some of us pay taxes for schools while we don't have children? I can see how this argument can go both ways. I have no kids, so why should I pay the school taxes? On the other hand, I care about the future of our society, so I would like our children to be taken care of. The rich in our society should understand that we all need to help each other. I don't think that a CEO of an oil company that retires with millions of dollars for the rest of his life is "working hard" for your money. The rich wish to get richer while the poor just wish to get by.

?????? so you don't think there are successful Democrats? Republican or Democrat if you are successful and have earning power beyond that of most mortals you should pay your fair share of taxes.
If you are a successful working person whom has a paycheck signed by someone other than yourself then you are probably paying your taxes right out of your weekly pay check.
If you are a successful business person, you might be cheating the government , abusing tax relief, and cheating the hard working employees and customers that make you successful. It should be bipartisan in nature, however the republicans seem to not understand this concept.

Let's establish some facts first. The richest 10% of the country earn 44% of the nation's income, but pay 68% of the federal income taxes. The top 1% earned 19%, but paid 37%. The top 50% pay 96.5% of the federal income taxes. The poorest 50% only pay 3.5%. In fact, the poorest actually receive negative income taxes (more than they paid in) due to the Earned Income Credit.
Contrary to what the liberals would have you believe, the rich do not get out of paying taxes using tax loopholes. They pay far more than the rest of us, mostly due to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) which eliminates must deductions and credits.
It is proper that the rich pay more, because they earn more. However, we see from stats that they are paying more than their fair share.
So why do Democrats want to tax the rich even more? Because they somehow feel that the rich have benefited unfairly, that they haven't earned their money fairly. So the rich must be punished for their success and more of their money redistributed to the less fortunate, through expanded government programs.

If you are successful at what you do, then you owe that success not only to your own ingenuity, but to the country in which you live that gives you the freedom to succeed. So we ask you to help that country by giving a portion of your earnings. Isn't it fair that those who benefit the most also provide the most support?
Conservatives like to operate under the belief that the only reason we're not all millionaires is because we don't work hard enough. And anyone who grew up poor knows that it is not true.

We have to shrink government or raise taxes. We currently have a 300 billion dollar deficit. Neither major party seems to want to shrink government (despite contrary rhetoric) so someone has to pay more taxes.
Who should it be? The Republicans say no one. The Democrats say the people that have benefited the most.
There's more than one way to skin a cat but unless something else changes, I feel taxes should be progressive. It doesn't make sense to have the CEO of Exxon pay the same amount as the guy making minimum wage.

I'm sure that was on everyone's mind today as they went to vote. They were thinking "Let's punish the successful people by taxing them more." NOT! What I dont think is fair is someone with a six figure income paying 1% of taxes & the middle class having to pay 30% of their income in taxes. Most of the reasonable Republicans I know say they dont mind paying their fair share if it goes to help those who are less fortunate than they are. Anyway, I have news for you, a very very small percentage of tax money goes to help the poor. The bulk of your taxes goes to paying for that war in Iraq.

What makes you think that because someone has money it means they earned it
Enron, Worldcom, Tyco their exec officers made millions and billions between them for doing nothin, but that wasnt enuf, no they had to steal more.
We pay 3 bucks a gallon for gas and the head of EXXon Mobile gets a 450 million retirement package
Carly Fiorino gets FIRED as CEO of HP and is punished with a 36 million buyout for her poor performance.
Paris Hilton gets a 150k tax rebate every year for money she never earned.
Warren Buffet says that he pays less taxes then his secretary on a percentage basis. he said if they had a flat tax it would triple his taxes
you might want to check the list of execs and companies that split and the money paid out for almost no work
companies like Disney, AT&T, GM and Merk
Disney paid its no.2 man under Eisner 145 million for about 14 months work. He said he wanted out cuz he wasnt happy :(

That is not how the progressive tax system works and you know this. Democrats might have to roll back the tax cuts on the wealthy - the top 2 to 5% because of irresponsible Republican spending. There are no plans to raise taxes for the middle class.

Yes. The current tax code is grossly unfair. The more money you earn, the higher a tax rate you are subjected to. This would seem counterintuitive, as it punishes those who work the hardest, and are more creative.
The only solution is a flat tax rate. For example, a flat tax rate of say 10%:
a person making $10,000 would pay $1000 in taxes
a person making $100,000 would pay $10,000 in taxes
what could be more fair than that?

I can only partly agree. I don't think "successful" people (if you gauge success by money), should be able to throw money in IRA's for themselves to avoid taxes. I do believe that some tax shelters are unfair and should be fixed. However, I also firmly believe in less taxes for as many people as possible while moving to balance the budget.
