Not to start a bashing for either party. I would just like to have a discussion on why I see so many Democrats assert that Republicans are always rich and/or are only concerned about tax breaks for rich people. I for one would still vote for and appreciate more tax breaks for middle class.

Republicans have historically been a wealthier contingent of voters because of one simple reason: graduated tax.

Think about it, let's say that Bill Gates is going through the grocery store line behind you. You pay $1.50 for a loaf of bread. When they ring his up, they say, "For you Mr. Gates, that will be $1,500."

Most people would say that isn't fair. Just because someone can afford to pay a certain amount, they shouldn't have to. Everyone uses the same postal system, Army, legal system, etc. Rich people shouldn't have to pay more.

Democrats, conversely, believe that rich people should pay more to support the poorer people to create a more socialist society.

I do believe that if you have money to help other people, you should, government shouldn't force you to donate to programs you don't believe in.

I hope that helps--Read "Atlas Shrugged." It will change the way you think about economics!

Wealth is equally distributed between the parties. There are no poor Democratic politicians.

And certainly the movie stars and celebrities who support he Democrats are as wealthy as Republican businessmen.

The Republicans gave tax breaks to the middle class by eliminating the marriage penalty and increasing the child tax credit. Those are two tax roll backs that Charles Rangel has said are slated to be reinstituted if the Democrats win. And he will be in charge of the Ways and Means committee, the one that deals with the budget and taxes, so he would know.

The recent tax cuts from Republicans have mostly only affected the upper 0.5% of the tax payers and corporations. The estate tax only affects estates over $3.5 million. Why are middle class taxpayers so worried about that? In addition, their policies have caused the largest slip into poverty for middle class families in recent history. (In other words, the rich are getting richer and the middle class is actually becoming poorer.)

The real question is, aside from money in your pocket, how has the Republican economic strategy affected you personally? Do you pay more in local taxes because the federal government cannot afford to assist state programs like transportation, etc.? Do you pay more due to inflation or interest rates? How much money do you currently owe toward to national debt versus how much was owed per capita only ten years ago?

The fact that the tax breaks have primarily gone to the rich is the origin of the argument that Republicans must be greedy, rich people. Because, unless you are rich, it makes no sense to vote for them based upon their tax philosophy. They have spent more on tax breaks for the wealthy and corporate at the expense of full funding domestic programs like education, art, research, medical programs, prescription drug programs, and infrastructure improvement.

Get it straight, I'm a Democrat who thinks Republicans are generally either wealthy or stupid.

Be a wealthy repulican. Give more money to the Republican party. Republic party votes on legislation to benefit your Corporation or give great tax benefits (Like No Taxes) to Christian Fundamentalist Groups with easily led non-rich, largely un/undereducated Republican churchgoers.

Your Companies saves money. You give yourself a nice disparate raise. You make more money next year, so you give more money next year to the republican party. Perhaps the Right wing fundamentalist groups hire a few evangelists to scream at the churchgoers to vote republican so more White House friends stay in office and vote more rules benefiting your company/church next year.

This is so clear a 2nd grader should be able to see this. The cycle goes on and on..(dems as well) until the system actually gets so corrupt that people get busted to the extent you just cannot hide the truth of the deception. Church molestation scandals, Foley scandal to start with....

That is why I see republicans as wealthy or stupid, in general, overall. The republicans I have met over the course of my life have been wealthy and religious or stupid and religious. No in between. That's what the democrats (low in comparable numbers to these two groups) are for.

OK... read thru all the posts, one thing hasn't been brought up. So what if Reps are wealthy. Just what do you think they do with their money? stuff it in a pillow case and and hide it under the bed? I kinda doubt that. Most that I know take their money and invest it somewhere somehow... yes... so they can make more money. But look at what that investment does for the rest of us.... If a business wants to expand, chances are they need to borrow the money somewhere... fortunately someone has money in the banks that they can lend out to others. That business can then borrow the money, employ more people. Is that a bad result of a rich person or ompany investing money??? I think not. Thats how our economy works.... but you seldom hear about that aspect of our economy. So... do you want to TAX, the wealthy, so they have less money to invest, so fewer people can have jobs? These taxes will just be spent on welfare because people can't find a job.... nobody wins in this scenario but the politicians. This is over simplified, but basically true.

Back to your basic question, dems beat up on the "rich" to make them more appealing to the lower class peoples. That way they can be elected and come up with more government programs to keep people in the lower class so they can get even more votes! enough for now

LMAO Don't I wish!!

I don't know the answer. There are a ton of rich Democrats out there, too. I have always wondered why someone like George Soros doesn't use his wealth to help eliminate poverty in this country instead of pouring his money into defeating the Republicans.

I think the Democrats as a whole want to punish hard-working Americans by raising their taxes. How much should any one person have to pay? I think 35% is more than adequate. Why penalize someone for working their butt off and making something of themselves?

As a member of the middle-class, I have to laugh when Democrats try to tell me that Republicans are trying to eliminate the middle-class. Really? The Republicans are the party that want to keep my taxes low.

And again.....Republicans aren't uneducated. That's complete and total liberal BS. According to "Party Politics in America" (M. Hershey, P. Beck; Addison-Wesley Educational Publishers, 2003), "People with lower incomes and less education are more likely to call themselves Democrats than Republicans." (p. 129)

I actually think the complete opposite. Liberals are usually the ones with the money, since they're so much better educated. It would make sense if republicans were all wealthy but that's not the case. They are usually poor, uneducated religious nuts. They vote republican on supposed "moral" platforms that are ironically full of hatred of foreigners, non-christians, gays, and anyone else that thinks differently from themselves.

it's not that Democrats think that all Republicans are wealthy only that poor and middle class Republicans are easily convinced to vote against their own best interests. big business always comes first for the Republican leadership, it's always corporate profit ahead of the people and the environment.
perhaps poor and middle class Republicans vote against their own best interest believing that someday they'll get a piece of the Big Man's pie.

yeah. i relate. when i was a kid i thought i was gonna be a rock star.

This is because Republican POLITICIANS work very hard to keep rich people as wealthy as possible and to keep corporations from being taxed. By association, most Republican constituents *should* be wealthy. But in fact, they are simply people who often vote against their own best interests. There was a time when Republican office-holders were more often fiscally conservative, and championed the conservation of American natural resources. But neo-conservatives, clearly give hardly a thought to those *traditional* concerns. Which reminds me, all the blubbering they do about "tradition" is guff. Look at how R politicians legislate.

Republican LEADERS or Republican VOTERS? Of course all republican VOTERS are not wealthy. 51% of the voting public went republican last time and simple math explains that they can't all be even remotely wealthy.

But once they have your vote, they are on their own, and republican leaders -- regardless of what they say -- have an agenda that is anti-social mobility and anti-middle class. The whole point of their tax cuts is to run up a huge deficit so that it can later be transferred to the middle class, or used to justify the elimination of social security and medicare programs.
