A normal Windows task manager, when opened has a variety of tabs that you can click on to see what is going on. All mine shows up is the processes, but the tabs with applications, performance etc. do not show up. Is there a way to fix that? And is there a place I can find out what processes should be running?

Check your computer for viruses and spyware. They will often disable to tabs to prevent you from being able to end the virus' processing, killing the virus or spyware.

Run either AVG or Avast (both free a download.com) to clear any viruses

Then run both Ad-ware and Skybot Seek & Destroy to clean any spyware. Again free a download.com.
