natural fibers are best for it and wear lots of thin layers as there is a pocket of air trapped in between each layer which acts as insulation

I do not live in the United Kingdom but I did have an ex-boyfriend that did and still have friends over there. They say that during the winter it not only snows, but rains. So, you may want to find long sleeve shirt, sweaters, turtle necks, downy coats, etc that you would normally wear in the New England area of the United States during the winter, along with clothing that can and will keep you dry. But fleece and wool clothing are great for cold weathers.

Layers layers layers. lots of thin layers is better than one thick one. The idea being to trap layers of air close to your body.
The final layer i.e. the outer layer (Shell) should be of a waterproof material and preferably a breathable material e.g. Goretex.
Karrimor, Berghaus, Sprayway, Lowe Apline, Columbia all make high quality mountain clothing good enough to combat the UK winter.
Unless you actually go hillwalking, you will of course end up looking like a chav. But hey, there's always your local Army/Navy Surplus store if your on a budget!

Usually layers is the best thing - they are much warmer - maybe a t-shirt, a fleece and a warm jacket.

Wool is warmest. I would suggest a vest, a polar neck (cotton/polyester), a nice thick jersey (wool), and a woolen/thick coat. Gloves and a scarf are also essential. If your hands get cold you can buy little plastic sachets with a heating component that is activated when you squeeze it. That is nice to go inside your gloves.
