Because bad news can cause the person receiving it to experience shock, which can result in blood flow receding from the brain, thus causing them to feel light-headed and faint. If they are sitting they are less likely to faint, and if they do faint, then they are closer to the ground and are less likely to hurt themselves from falling a shorter distance.

This is due to the fact that people faint or become weak in the kness/legs when given bad news. It is to prevent them from hurting themselves if the collapse. It is overused today.

maybe cuz they're afraid the person erceiving the news mite faint
