It doesn't necessarily help you live any longer. Why do we search for pride?

Because if your life is crappy and you find someone that you think is worst than you it gives you a great feeling to know that someone anyone is worse off then you are

The pride comes from the fact that you feel just a little better about yourself when others are in worse shape than you

It is necessary for us to be the best and be adored by others. I think it has roots in psychology (something about being chosen as an appropriate future parent?) And of course it is our pride but it is not bad. When you want to be the best you just do your best. It is very important for progress and society (though rather harmful for your soul as I understan pride)

The competitive side of people, allows for humans to progress. It also allows for a legacy to be left and that is way of living longer than physically possible!

Competition has been a part of our history since the beginning. It's because man needs to feel like he has done something worth while... like he is the best at whatever he does...
