Is it ok to let your 5-6 month old baby sit upright in there swing at night to sleep? I heard that it can cause back problems. Is this true? I dont have a child, but i was wondering.

It's fine to let them sleep in the swing for a nap, but definitely not through the night and I'll tell you why:

Babies do most of their growing while they are asleep, so, if your child is sitting up or at an angle (like they are in the swing) their spine will grow to be the shape they were sitting in instead of straight (like if they were laying on their back).

It's also very bad for their necks. Most likely her head is leaning to one side or the other and everyone knows when you sleep like that it hurts when you wake up and tilt your head.

And also, what are you going to do when she gets too big for the swing? You might as well start making her sleep in her crib before she gets too big for the swing and you have a horrible situation on your hands.

I can't say I haven't given into this a few times to save my own sanity. Sometimes, its worth an occasionally slip in daily activity to get some sleep yourself. My 3rd son is 9 months old. He has slept through the night twice in his life...both times in the swing.

If done on a regular basis, I think you will just have an issue breaking them of the habit, and those swings do have a weight limit. As far as back problems, I'm not sure I'm too convinced. Like I said, they can only use a swing for a certain amount of their life. I've heard of parents letting their babies sleep in the swing for the first month or so because that was the only place they were content.

My son started sleeping 5 hour stretches at 7 weeks, and then by 4 months would sleep 10-11 hours.... he would still wake up for his pacifier once or twice a night, but he was still 1/2 asleep, and as long as we stuck it in his mouth, he'd be sleeping again within the minute. At about a year, he finally stopped waking up at all during the night... and now at 15 months will go 12 hours without making a peep :-)

The swing cradles the baby like it would be still in the womb. I now put my daughter to bed in the crib, but sometimes she's a little cranky and wants to be cuddled, that's when I put her in the swing to sleep. She's fine, every check up she's had perfect health (with the exception of a rash that occured due to diet change). She is now 7 mos.
Especially when you're a new mom, it's easier to put the baby in the swing then disrupt their sleep because you're so paranoid that if they are laying down, they'll choke or something.

Babies should be sleeping like adults at night - on their back. Sitting up is not only bad for the back, but also for digestive system and some organs.

If / when you become a parent - you would never dream of allowing your child to sleep sitting up!!!

I would imagine if someone were to do that on a regular basis it would definitely cause problems. Reason being that the babies spine is soft and by having bent into the shape of the swing regulary is not helping the spine form correctly.

it is a bad idea... not only it could cause back problems, the baby will get used to sleeping in the swing and when the baby gets too big for the swing, he/she will throw a fit if you try to put them to sleep in their crib!

My baby has been sleeping in her crib since age 2 months.

i heard that alot too but still don't know if its true or false. now they make the baby swing adjustable to about 3 different angles. if baby does sleep in swing, you can adjust swing to a more lying down position so it should be fine.

i think this may cause other problems for you. what are you going to do when you eventually HAVE to put your kid in his crib? he's not going to like it, he won't be used to it. look, i'll say what i always say. 5-6 months is about the time when you need to let your kid cry it out. give it 3 nights, i swear it works. put him down, say i love you, good night and leave. he'll cry for a while. you can go in and comfort him if you like, but don't pick him up. rub his head or tummy to quiet him down, tell him you love him, good night and leave again. turn down the monitor so it doesn't make you crazy but make sure you can still hear him just in case. the first night he'll cry the most. the second night should be shorter and the third night he might whimper a bit but will go to sleep fairly easily. if he wakes up during the night, give him time to put himself back to sleep. it's important for kids to learn how to do this.
