Well nothing other than survival makes them produce webs, but "webs" actually have several purposes.
Silk can be used in the construction of webs, as well as in wrapping food, making egg sacs and for ballooning (dispersal)
All of these activities have to be done by the spiders that can perform them in order to survive.

the web is so that they can catch food. I believe that is it's main purpose. As far as what it's made of and HOW they make it, I really don't know.
