Wearing a suit and tie for a walk-in seems rather humiliating.

Maybe a dress shirt with khakis and black oxfords?

As an ex-manager, one of the many things I looked at was my first impression of the person applying. I looked for pride in personal appearance because to me, and many other employers, a person that cares about the way they look, they will take pride in their job. Most of the time I gave an interview, it was the second or third time Id seen them. I am one of the few managers that reserves the right to not completely make my mind up based on first opinions, but most managers tend to be a bit shallow during this process. Id say dress nice, business casual. On the other hand, dont over do it. I always got a bad impression when someone came in wearing pinstriped pants, matching jacket, vest, and tie. To me, that person was trying to hide themselves. Dress in something that makes you feel good about yourself and that message will resonate through you and your actions without any words. No jeans. Nice slacks, button up shirt (optional tie), or polo style shirt, no sneakers, must wear a belt. Absolutely no hat. Anyway, those are the things I noticed while formulating a first impression without really realizing it. The only time I would say to wear he whole monkey suit get-up would be a corporate setting. Hope that helps.

Yes, I would agree that a suit is over the top. Maybe a dress shirt and tie to go with the khakis and oxfords. Also, for men, shave impeccably and pluck unsightly nose/ear/eyebrows.

It depends on the job. If it's for golf pro - khakis with off white shoes. If it's office, and you are young, you could try a non-white shirt, a tie that is not too brash, a slightly tailored vest, definitely colours that go together, but not black shoes -- too formal.

i dont care what job your walking into to apply, i always were black slacks & nice blouse/top. because its professional...then if i get called back in for interview i may wear the same thing or change tops. i dont have alot of prof. outfits. if you dont want to spend alot on an outfit, go to a thrift store, i do it all the time. Im on a budget. they always have cute stuff. i dont care what others think. i wore black slacks and nice top to get app & job interview for Dollar Tree. Last week i got complimented from one of the assistant managers saying i looked very professional and that not alot of people care anymore. there tired of that. good luck.
