I love all of Christine Feehan's books! They are romantic, but they are modern, gothy, paranormal type books. Awesome books. I would recommend any of the "Dark" series, the Leopard people series, and also the GhostWalkers series. They are so compelling - I aways find myself reading these books sooooo fast and furious and want more!
Sherilyn Kenyon books are great for the same reasons above - just a different take on vampires, shape-shifters, etc.
Maggie Shayne really has a great series, too!
Of course, Anne Rice is always good, too.
Hope this helps some!

I loved the book House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus II. A true tragedy, beautifully written with a very sad ending.
I would also consider Lolita by Nabokov to be a beautiful, sad, romantic book.
