start wars, lose wars, put up with Mr bush (parts 1 and 2), make friends with Mr Blair, exploit people - both inside and outside their own country, become the most hated government in history(probably - apart from north Korea - who lets face it are kooooooookoo!!) fund unscrupulous people/regimes and then, you've guessed it, start a war. ( reading back, it does sound like i am anti war, but - just for the record, i do support our troops!!)

I suppose you could talk about our branches.
We have three branches that check and balance each other --- executive, legislative, and judicial.
The executive is the prez, and the legislative is the congress. Congress is made up of 435 house members and 100 senators. House members have elections every two years; senators every six. Presidents every four years, and the supreme court judges (judicial) stays in for life once they are voted in by Congress. It is our gov's duty to uphold the constitution, ratified in 1789.
A history of our political parties:
We started out as one party, but after the death of Washington, the gov split between Federalists and anti-Federalists. The anti-Federalists became the Democratic Republicans lead by Jefferson and the Feds were lead by Alexander Hamilton.
The Feds disappeared and were replaced by the Whigs, anti-Slavery and reformist people. the Democratic Repubs became the Democrats.
In came the no-nothing party, an ultra-nationalist party that was hardcore Protestant and anti-Catholic and immigration. They dissapeared, and so did the whigs with the emergence of the Republican party, under Lincoln, and the split in the Democratic party between north and south. When the Depression hit, the Democrats officially became the blue-collar party of the people, and the Republicans became the white-collar party of the rich, essentially.
Checks and balance:
Let's say the prez wants to get someone elected to the supreme court. If congress says no, then the process goes on to repeat itself. Or if congress sends the prez a bill, wanting it to be signed, if he vetoes it, then it dies. Legislative branch can override the veto with a 2/3 vote.
Taxes:
Our government taxes of course. 1/3 of your income goes to the gov. Social security is a sort of trust fund that you pay for every month for someone else, so when they retire they can have money. The same goes for you when you retire. The Budget is how much we have to spend, and the deficit is how much we are in debt. We are 9 trillion dollars in debt, mainly because of the War (50 million dollars a day spent there!)
War: Congress declares war, as was the case with Iraq.
Concurrent powers: powers (prez, congress, supreme court) working together
implied powers: power that is not said in the constitution, but is implied because it's necessary, like the draft.
expressed: power expressed in the constitution
Education: state and federal responsiblity
healthcare: abysmal. Our drug companies are rich off us, and the Repubs do nothing about it.
Foreign policy: self explanatory

They do what every democratic government does, that is to be there for its people come rain or shine. Don't be led astray by such wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as there are meant to benefit both the Americans and the respective inhabitants of those two countries. Focus on the economy, the unity which prevails among the Americans, the sports and how it feels to be a super power.

I think they probably lie a lot, cover up a lot of stuff, kill some people and pretend to be all moral and caring. Bit like any government really.
