There is a lunar eclipse.

It means that the moon is either low in the sky and it looks red for the same reason that a sunset does; or if it's high in the sky it may be experiencing a near-lunar eclipse. Passing through the penumbra of the Earth will make it appear deep red.

The reason for all three effects (the sun or the moon appearing red near the horizon, and the red penumbra) are the same: the scattering of light from the sun in the earth's atmosphere. Blue light gets scattered out first (which is why the sky is blue) and then green, leaving red light to last the longest.

It means that the atmosphere is full of (very) small particles of dust, sand, etc. These particles scatter the short wavelengths of the light from the moon (the blue and green light) in the atmosphere, leaving only the longer wavelengths (yellow and red) for us to see.

If you are thinking about a superstitious meaning of a red moon, I don't know, and I don't care, since I don't believe in it anyway. :-)

Maybe a visit to the optician would help? But seriously, the redness is caused by dust particles in the athmosphere.

it can also appear red because of dust/smog in the air. like from a volcano, forest fire, sand storm
