I was born in Luton and still live there. Do not go to Heathrow by train it is both costly and time consuming. There is no direct train to Heathrow so you would have had to go from Luton to Kings Cross/St Pancras and then get the underground to Heathrow.

Instead go online to www.gobycoach.com and book a coach to Heathrow from Luton Bus Station [or Luton Airport]. I went on holiday recently departing from Heathrow and got my coach from Luton bus station at about 4am. I also booked online and I have been doing it this way for years and haven;t found a cheaper way yet!!

The coach can also work out at about £20 return but it's still a lot cheaper than the train I can assure you.. and it's more direct it goes straight to the bus terminal at Heathrow...

I'm pretty sure National Express http://www.nationalexpress.com/ have a service from Luton AIrport to Heathrow.

The alternatives are Greenline http://www.greenline.co.uk/ and Easybus http://www.easybus.co.uk/ have services from Luton Airport to Central London. You would then have to tube it in.

Bear in mind that there will be heavy traffic in the peak rush hour as you come out of Luton. If you're landing at Luton before 9.30am and have less than a couple of hours to get to Heathrow, you're better off booking a cab. The cab will be able to take the back roads that the bus won't.

Train from Luton Airport to London Kings Cross - tube (Circle line, yellow, westbound) to Paddington - Train ('Heathrow Express') to Heathrow.

I think there have been engineering works of late on the Circle Line, so if this is the case, take the sky blue Victoria Line southbound from Kings Cross to Oxford Circus, then the brown Bakerloo Line northbound to Paddington.

Try www.thetrainline.co.uk for online timetables and booking tickets.
