This is a great question that I was about to ask. Suggestions that I have tried include:
1. Write a thank you note IMMEDIATELY after you return from the interview. If you had multiple interviewers (on a panel), make the letters unique.
2. As one person said, ask when they expect to come to a decision.
3. Make a follow up call if you have not heard anything within a week to ten days.
4. DO NOT CALL MULTIPLE TIMES. This tends to annoy the hiring managers/analysts.
5. Phrase your questions confidently. Try not to sound desperate.
6. DO NOT ASK for the job during the interview or during follow up. Use phrases like: "Please inform me of the next step in the hiring process."
7. Highlight points about yourself that you did not get to in the interview.
8. KEEP APPLYING/INTERVIEWING for other jobs! Don't get too overconfident.
9. Pace yourself. If you feel depressed about the whole situation, take a break but DON'T GIVE UP!

DISCLAIMER: I have not received a job offer. These are suggestions that I have picked up along the way.

Usually they would let you know within a couple of days if you did or didn't get it. If you don't hear then you can always call and ask where they are in the process, if they say you didn't get it then ask for feedback about why and what you could have done better or what the successful candidate had that you didn't.

normally you will be notified if you get the job and will remain silent if you are not. so if they dont call you, then you are not hired. of course, you can always call and ask for the status of your application.

Call them back and ask them, again and again and again and again and again.
