Why does my external modem start squeeling when my land phone rings twice?

I have dial-up. This was not a problem until recently. The caller cannot get through unless i answer phone on the first or second ring.
Of course this only happens when my computer is turned on. I am not connected to the internet when this occurs.

haha, your modem is set to pick up the incoming call. you should tell your modem to not pick up incoming calls.

look in your help for the information. each modem has its own way of doing things.
