The calf was dead and only weighed about ten pounds. no fur either

Wasn't sure if you meant a live calf or a stillborn one.

Found an article that may explain stillborn births.

Not so sure about early live births ... though I'd consider the possibility that the cow had been knocked, or had slipped & fallen.
