I think people are are sometimes attracted out of curiousity or boredom and a false feeling that they aren't "the sort of person" to get addicted, and then before they know it.....

What attracts people to anything? Because they get something out of it. Either status, power, money, happiness, religion, sex or freedom from pain, hunger or inadequate anxiety. I think that a lot of people are incomplete in some way, that is the way we are. This hole, this void in some of us is a psychic hunger that needs fullfillment, to be filled to make us feel complete. Some folks turn to drugs, some to drink, some to sex and some to power to feed their demons, It is sad, but that is the way a lot of folks are, moralising and wringing of hands will not make any difference to how self destructive and stupid some folks can be. Some numpties will smoke dog sh*t if they thought they could get off on it, I kid you not! All the legislation in the land cannot save some people from themselves. If such legislation was put into practice, we would not have any freedoms at all, society would be so restrictive and totalitarian that nobody could do anything daring, risky or adventurous. Would you want that? I know I wouldn't.

Did you know that if marajuana was used in moderation you have a less chance of getting alzheimers? Doctors have proven that. That's just one illegal drug. Now let's look at some "legal" drugs that are used DAILY:
1) Lipitor (legal drug) - can cause amensia until the drug wears off, known to cause breast cancer in women (http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2003/11/07/bad_news_about_statin_drugs.htm)
2) Coumidin (legal drug) - causes fatal bleeding. (http://www.newstarget.com/drug_side_effects.html)
3) Avastin (legal drug for cancer) - cause your brain to bleed
4) Beta Blocker (legal drug) - promotes diabetes
5) Common painkillers (over the counter legal drug) - if taken by expectant mothers it can cause birth defects in her unborn child.
The list can go on and on for the right to use legal / illegal drugs. When it comes down to it, there's many many sites out there talking about the side effects of both, many with fatal side-effects.
I'm not saying all illegal drugs are good or bad, I've chosen not to do any personally, but in the end doctors everyday are coming back with the "good" side-effects of drugs, mainly marajuana (in the last 6 months I've read over 10 articles on the good points to smoking marajuana). It isn't stupidity, low self-esteem, etc, etc. that turns people to drugs, it's how the drugs make them feel at that time. And to say people who do them will kill while on drugs is false, it's the mindset of the person not the drug. If they want to kill someone, they will, whether or not they are high. Yes, drugs are bad for your health, but so is eating spinach (remember a kid JUST DIED from eating a vegetable). Drugs do not always ruin peoples lives, it's if you cannot handle the addiction. And the side effects to some drugs, if done in moderation and not by some out of control person, are not always fatal, unlike some of the "LEGAL drugs" I've already listed that will kill you and there's nothing you can do about it.
I've known and still know many who do drugs. They are laid back when doing so, still have money in their pocket because they know enough not to spend all their money on drugs, are not out to kill themselves or other people, and some are upstanding citizens and business people right in my community. Too browbeat all drug users into one category is like saying all apples are red, when in fact not all are.

The very illegality is all it takes.
Make something legal, it loses it's attraction.
Make something illegal and the attraction soars. Look at the US during prohibition.
Legalise everything and the atttraction will diminish exponentially.
Who wants to take something that can be bought at Boots, over the counter?

I suspect it is because of the very fact that they are illegal tempts a lot of people. It's a personal rebellion against society and the law of the land.

It's because the buzz is worth the side effects and when it's over they just take more to get the good feeling back. It's a vicious cycle.

legal drugs are just as destructive! the reason a lot of drugs are illegal is due to tax the black market would make it impossible to regulate tax and therefore the government will not make them legal
