Find a diffrent physical habit.
I used to bite my nails, and then I switched to twisting my rings.
I read somewhere it takes something 21 times to become a habit. If you can hold out for that long and find something else to do instead of biting your nails, you can probably drop the habit.
It just takes some will power.
Good luck!

unfortunately it is down to will power. if you really want to stop, then you will find a way. plus you probably shouldn't worry that much about germs and diseases, because generally one won't stick their fingers (or thumb) into their mouth if they feel it is dirty. and I'm guessing that this isn't some new habit you have recently picked up, so really anything you were going to catch from pathogens on your hands you are probably immune to already as you probably caught it when you were little and didn't care if there was dirt on your fingers/thumb. so if it is a choice between putting your fingers in your mouth or liking a toilet seat, go with the first option.
if you find yourself wanting to suck your thumb or bite your nails, find something to distract yourself with. likewise if there is a particular time when you always find yourself wanting to bite your nails or suck your thumb, like when you are going to bed or when you are watching TV, make sure ahead of time that you have something to do with your hands then. if your hands are occupied than problem solved. but eating is not a good method of distraction/ occupying hands; it'll just make you fat and any benefits it has in the situation are outweighed by the negatives.
it really comes down to will power and how much you want to stop. so good luck.
p.s. that glove idea that other people suggested sounds like a good one. i never thought to try that myself, but it might work; it sound like it would. but then you might get people asking why you are wearing gloves all the time. i guess that is ok though because it is winter and cold. 'tis the season to kick the habit then i guess.

There are several methods: 1. Have something else in your mouth, such as gum or a lollipop. 2. Purchase a bad tasting nail polish. They're available at your local drugstore. 3. Set up a reward system. Each day you go through without sucking your thumb or biting your nails, give yourself a dollar.

You first problem about stopping these things is Worrying about them. You worry you nibble. Try taking a little time out each day and relax. At home put on those disposable surgical gloves, these will not interfere with your daily life, but you will find your chewing the ends of the gloves, and so you replace them whenever then need arises. These Gloves can be brought quite cheaply normally in boxes of 100. I would bet that by the time you have gone through possibly and box and half you will notice a difference in your nails and this will then encourage to look after them, but be prepared for them to be very soft and hard to shape at first. Good Luck

Ok, I was a thumb sucker too- I did it till I was 15 yrs old, (I am now 30 somethinhg) but it was when I started liking boys I stopped for fear of them knwing my habbit--- BUT! I MUST SAY It is NOT a 'bad' habbit, it is jusst a type of insecurity!
now about your nails, only YOU can decide to stop! my daughter is a nail biter, but I have seen her stop and let them grow out, pretty and long, then she will go right back to biting.
Maybe it is a nervous thing? I do not know.
But you can do it, just think of how nice your hands will look with pretty long nails((:
good luck... I hope this helps!

If you really want your nails to look good you will stop biting them trust me. I use to bit my nails and i guess one holiday, for summer, i had better things to do and my nails grew a little and i loved it. I started to grow one hand and bit the other and then i stopped biting the other hand eventually.
Sucking you thumb ehhhhh? I suck mine and i i am sure i am much older than you. But the things is, i suck my thumb to sleep and when i am lonely. Cracked up thumbs don't look tooo good so unless you can suck it and have your thumb looking normal stop. Rub it in something nasty.

You really need to figure out why you do these things. Biting your nails and sucking your thumb are things you do to sooth yourself. Most often its soothing against anxiety, nervousness, fear, depression or the like. If you can figure out what the underlying cause of your discomfort is you can work on the cause which will eliminate the need for you to sooth yourself.
Talk to your doctor about what you think the underlying cause is and s/he might be able to suggest something to help.
Good Luck!

i bite my nails too and have gone through everything aswell! the way too see it is that it is a bad habit like smoking and to give that up in one go is tough. so why dont you try just biting your thumbs, you can always hide them my mum said! try too keep your hands busy and when you find that youre doing it more, like i do it when im thinking, stressed and when watching a film, so i try to keep more aware of those moments.get people to tell you to stop too, you will have good and bad days but dont worry there are far worse things you can do and we all have our hang ups! it is what makes us!xx

The thumb thing, that'll go away with time. The nail thing...I would say...just stop, but that's easier said than done. I actually used to bite mine ridiculously, but one time I actually contained myself enough to let them get decently long (before biting them off again) and all ya gotta do, is just look at them when they're long and pretty, and say, "wow, they're really long and pretty." That was my incentive to stop. I would rather my nails look nice than to be short and jagged. Maybe this will work for you. Just DON'T DO IT!

Try getting a Manicure. It helps because the acrylic is harder to bite through comfortably. You will see it takes a little effort and maybe leave it alone and enjoy your fabulous nails. Plus you may have to just grow out of it. Good Luck!
