Check this out. Apparently it is not true UNLESS it's some kind of munchkin conspiracy. I heard they are trying to take over the world from the knees down.

The story I heard is that an actor playing a Munchkin was caught drinking on the set. He was scolded by the Director then fired and escorted out of the studio. Later during the filming of a musical number the disgraced actor returned to the studio unnoticed. He was terribly depressed and hanged himself backstage. His dangling body was found soon after the scene was finished. The corpse was removed and production carried on accordingly. Apparently the spot where the actor took his life was part of the filmed scene. Some audience members throughout the original showings of the movie reported seeing a ghostly or shadowy image in the background during the musical number. These reports varied. Some viewers said they saw the shape of a small man or child dangling from a rope and slowly swaying back & forth. Others said they saw a transparent figure in mid-air flailing it's arms. The worried studio executives had the master copy of the film scrutinized and indeed saw the ghost of the dead actor. It is believed the studio had the image edited from the reel and redistributed to movie houses. Most of the original copies were retrieved but some were'nt. Allegedly it's those few untouched reels which circulated throughout the years that show the hanged ghost.

You will need to rent an older VHS of the movie, something produced in the eighties to see it. It is during the scenes when Dorothy arrives in Munchkin land, however I can't recall if it is after the music number or before. It is just a shadow, and maybe just a play of light, but it is definately there. Kinda like the little boy hanging around the window in Three Men and a Baby.

I've also heard that, and I've watched the movie carefully ever since. There is no such scene in the current release of the movie.
There was an earlier version of The Wizard of Oz, a silent film, that was a much darker story. It is possible there was something along those lines in that version, but not in the one they are currently playing.

that's certainly merely a huge chicken flapping it is wings. I somewhat have been smitten by potential of this action picture because i grew to become into little. whilst it got here out interior the theaters like 10 or 15 years in the past, it grew to become into VERY glaring that that's barely a chicken. The set director borrowed many birds from the l. a. zoo to grant the woodland scene a exciting, creepy feeling. additionally, the munchkin scene grew to become into filmed AFTER the "awesome" scene and the actors who performed the munchkins weren't on set yet.

Here's the answer I told someone yesterday.
There's not really a man hanging himself in the film. Explanation below. :)
"A wandering crane (one of several exotic birds seen near the Tin Man's cottage at the start of the scene) is visible in the background trees of one scene; its distance from the camera and confusing "swinging" silhouette has been the source of a decades-long rumor that a Munchkin actor hanged himself on the set."

I have the anniversary edition of the movie. In the extended/deleted scenes they point out and show that it is a stagehand moving around in the background behind the forest trees. Now when I see the movie I see it so clearly!

I believed this forever until my husband proved me wrong. We watched the DVD and in the scene with the "hanging" we stopped it and zoomed in. Once you zoom in you can tell it's a bird. You can see it lift its wings. If you just watch it normally it does look like someone swinging like they've been hanged.

No. there is no one hanging, however when the tin man comes to life and you see dorothy and the scarecrow talking, in the background you can see chickens running around.

I read something about that a while back -- it explained that it was a prop that wasn't properly cleared off the set. It's not really a person hanging -- just something that wasn't supposed to be there.
