I was a substitute teacher and worried about this since we live near a navy base-lots of people from different parts of the world. I got a test done to see if I was immune to certain diseases and I believe one was measles. Just ask your midwife/OB about your concerns.

First of all, if your parents took good care of you when you were a little girl, then they must have taken you to a doctor or clinic to ensure that you received all the recommended immunizations, which include the vaccine for German measles. Ask your mom or dad if they did this [chances are that they did, unless you were born and raised in an undeveloped country]. Furthermore, when you got pregnant and started going to the Gyno for prenatal care, he/she must have ordered a series of laboratory tests done on you; the one to determine if you are immune to German measles is among them. Call your doctor and ask him/her if this test was done, and what the results were. If you are immune to the disease, there is almost no way you can catch it. Just for your peace of mind, try to avoid contact with your niece until she's diagnosed. German measles is very rare in the U.S.; there are other diseases with symptoms like the ones you described, so maybe she's coming up with other illness, not necessarily German measles. I wish you the best of luck, and hope that this advise has been of help and comfort to you.

You should get vaccinated for that? I think its manditory. Ask the doctor for an mmr immunization shot if you havent already had one and its safe to use during pregnancy...otherwise you should be very very careful becasue you can get the measels just from being in the same room as an infected person!

There is not much to prevent it at this time it is all ready airbourn, which happens before symptoms show up. Are you sure it's german measeals, that is pretty rare. I would just keep every thing clean wipe down with clorox.
