Can I mix them with compost or do something useful with them, or is bagging them for the garbage man my only option?

ashes can be a good part of composte, yes, and some houseplants like it too.......

u don't need to mix them with nything. they r very good fertilizers as it is. just dig a small trench where ever u want to use them, and once u've put the ashes in it, re-cover the ashes. within days, the ashes will have become fertilizers.

Because of the carbon in them you can mix it with topsoil for a great and healthy plant food. I am not saying you need TO MIX THEM BUT THAT IS AN EASIER AND CLEANER WAY TO DEAL WITH THEM THAN JUST THROWING THEM ON THE GROUND AND HAVING THE POTENTIALY TRACKED BACK in the house by kids or animals.

All the people I know with fire places just bag the ashes and throw it away

You could cover yourself with them and pretend that your tinker bell with magical fairy dust! Or you could go with the plan that sounds more logical.Which would be to just bag it and put it in the garbage.

Ashes are better then salt on snow or ice

Frist make sure they are cold then you can just spread them around your yard
