The reason I ask is because I am seeing a girl who recently broke off an engagement to her fiance who is overseas. I heard through the grapevine that they were married at the justice of the peace?? or something. Which would make sense because you receive more money from the government when you're in the military on active duty and you're married. How can I find out? I asked her but she says it's not true...

Marriage licenses are public records. If you know what country or US county they may have gotten married in, then you can check at the county clerk's office of that county.

There are also a lot of web sites that will look up public records for you but there is a fee involved.

It's soooo complicated nowadays. To be absolutely sure you have to search for a marriage at the exact courthouse where it was recorded. If you guess wrong...too bad for you.

I am going thru a similiar triangle myself only the divorce "looks" real because he forged her signature on it. I am married to a bigamist and can't prove it without the 1st wife coming forward. She refuses to go to the law because he is paying her mortgage. Who says crime doesn't pay??
Don't end up like this. save yourself some sanity. Please. Listen to your gut.

Brett, I think it's only fair that she be honest with you. Simple tell her that you have heard rumors that the two of them married by the justice of the peace. and say... "were you?"
