It totally depends upon what sounds good at the time. I've done both and enjoyed both. Having said that, two of my best vacations were ecotourist/nature vacations. One was being with the gray whales in the San Ignacio Lagoon on the Baja. The other was in the Canadian Arctic where I got to see the Northern Lights, polar bears in the wild, and experience and entirely different way of life with the Inuit, to name just a few things. It was like being five years old again and enjoying wonderful, new experiences every day. It really gave me a new perspective.

It largely depends on who's operating it. Some sun and sand compnies work with local people, contribute to the local economy and minimise their ecological impact, whilst some "eco" trips do the exact opposite. Likewise some beach holidays are very detrimental whilst some nature orientated ones do immense good.

My advice - find a company who operates an ethical travel policy and see what they offer that appeals. May be volunteering, may be a beach holiday, or a conservation project. Just make sure they really contribute to the local economy and aren't detrimental to the enviroment and local area.

My favorite has been a bit of both...Sol Duc Hot Springs on the Olympic pennsula, & the Western beaches of the same.
