Has society completely forgotten about those wonderful old institutions called libraries? Your local library will let you borrow all the free books you can carry. If they aren't useful, bring them back and try some different ones. Librarians are very helpful in recommending books on the subjects you are interested in. If they are useful, buy a used copy online for really cheap. That way, you get the benefit of paper books without risking any money up front.

bit torrents are the best way to download free stuff. look into it, you won't be sorry. I got the entire seven book dark tower series and practically every book Stephen King's ever written (and by the way, I own them all in hardback too- great writer).

I like paper books. They smell better. Try www.abebooks.com. Lots of great books for $1 plus shipping.
