There are pro's and con's to three major parties. Such as fragile minority governments causing more frequent elections. But less chance of pig-headed governments that are in a minority position.

Yes. Perot almost pulled it off. He kept the other two clowns somewhat honest.

No it wouldn't. What seems to work best is if the president is
from one party and the house/senate have the majority of
the other!! Clinton's terms were like this - he got a lot done
because the parties were forced to compromise!!

Look at Canada - there's been three major partes (well 2 major
one and one minor one) for quite some time. Now they have had
a minority gov't for the past 2.5 years and its fragile every day.

Yes...I personally think a third party in the US would lower the tensions among the only two parties...Democrats and Republicans. Since I'm independant, but I currently support the democrats on their view of environmental issues (the republicans say it will "hurt our economy"). Also, the chances of getting an actually smart president would be higher.

Yes, I think a three-party system would at least offer more options and enable citizens to find a candidate who most closely fits their views.

IMHO it would also help the politicians pay more attention to the *people*, instead of the *special interest groups*, since there would be more viable options for people to choose from on election day.

Then again, I'm something of a Pollyanna, politically.

The problem is that no one has ever, and never will, bring up a good third party. Sounds like a good idea in a perfect world though

well the independent party is still low on the totem but it's getting up there... I think they should change their names to the Moderate Party... I think the major 2 parties are to far left and right and I think the independent party is in the middle.. so I think they need to change their name and I think they could build with more support...

There's only one way to find out....... I say go for it.

In my opinion, we need either a third party (or four, or more...) or more accountability for the ones already out there. It's like the episode of south park. Why vote when the only choices are a douche or a turd sandwich?

Yes. I think a third party might go a long way towards de-polarizing the country.
